I live in a world where a size 6 is a plus size and only the fair and blonde are rewarded, so I think it's important to post photos about alternative forms of beauty that we don't see in the media and storytelling. I post photos of women who are dark-skinned, because if I don't, there are a world of us chocolate little girls growing up trying to straighten our hair and bleach our skin and desperate if we have to leave the house without perfect straight hair. I post photos of beautiful little albino little girls who are systematically being killed all over the continent of Africa. I post photos of natural women with no botox who wear a size 14 beautifully because the last time I was on a TV set, the teenaged girls on had faces full of botox, blonde weaves, weighed no more than 75lbs and drank coffee instead of eating food. I post beauty because our sense of what is normal, beautiful and good has become a little warped...so I'm a beauty addict and I celebrate us looking the way we did the day we came out of mother's womb because everyone thought we were beautiful then... Affirming this beauty is a conscious act that I do daily because if you don't, the outside world will start tearing away at your sense of self, sense of rightness in the universe. I work hard at affirming my natural beauty as America's advertisers work at convincing me that something is wrong with me. Their ethic is driven by something unreal...my aesthetic is the one that i was born to.... I love the kind of beauty that says, "I'm not trying to fit in to make you more comfortable. I'm not looking outside of me to figure what's beautiful...this is what I got and it feels good and that's what makes it beautiful.... | |
